Types of wiring duct and how to choose them

As the number of electrical appliances used increases, it becomes necessary to connect various wires and cables. Exposed wires can easily break due to contact or other causes. Wiring ducts are used to prevent such risks, and there are different types depending on the material and conditions of use. This article will explain the types of wiring ducts and how to select one that best suits your purpose.

What is a wiring duct?

Wiring ducts are used to safely organize many electrical wires. Unnecessarily exposed wires may come into contact with other wires or objects, causing unexpected damage. If they are properly placed inside  wiring ducts, it is possible to respond quickly for maintenance or to investigate abnormalities.

Types of wiring ducts and how to choose them

Wiring ducts can be selected according to the purpose or location where they are used, material, color, etc.

Selecting by location of use

Wiring ducts can be selected according to the location where they will be used.

In places where large amounts of electricity are used, such as companies and stores, electricity is sent directly from the power company. It is usually divided into a transformer called a cubicle and a control panel that actually sends electricity to the power source. Since switchboards  are often installed outdoors, wiring ducts must also be water and moisture resistant.

Distribution board

Distribution boards are installed in most facilities where electricity is used, such as homes, and have the function of distributing electricity to individual rooms. Usually, the distribution board is installed behind the breaker, but in older apartments and houses, it may be installed outdoors or in a corner of a dirt floor. In such cases, it is still necessary to choose a highly water-resistant product.

Store lighting

Wiring ducts are also used in store spotlights, etc.,  in order to constantly change the location and color of the light source. Duct rails, lighting rails, or track lights are also considered a type of wiring duct. These are usually used indoors, but depending on the event, they may be used on outdoor stages or in campgrounds, etc. In such cases, weather-resistant wiring ducts should be used.

Selecting by material

Wiring ducts are available in a variety of materials depending on the purpose.

Made of 66 nylon or similar material. This material is used in many electronic components because of its excellent heat resistance and strength. It is used for wiring duct mounts.

PPO (polyphenylene oxide) and other plastics are used. They have a wide operating temperature range and can be used in any location. Some products are available in types that can be easily built by hand. These are about 20% lighter than general PVC ducts.

One of the lightest plastic materials, polypropylene floats on water and does not absorb water. It is very easy to build and is used in a variety of purposes , from solid objects such as food storage containers to clothing and carpeting. Polypropylene wiring ducts are also available in a freely bendable types.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

In addition to the plumbing pipes that are often used, PVC is a material widely used for bags and food packaging materials. It has a very high flame resistance with a flash point of 391°C and is highly resistant to chemical products such as acids, alkalis, and oils. It is said to have a service life of more than 50 years outdoors, making it a material that can be used in any location.

Selecting by color

When using wiring ducts as lighting fixtures in homes and stores, it can be coordinated with the interior  by choosing colors that match the surrounding environment. For dark areas such as bars, choose dim colors such as gray, and for living rooms and accessory counters, choose lighter colors such as white.

Wiring ducts are essential for the safe use of multiple electrical wires. It is possible to operate more effectively by considering the materials and colors according to the purpose and environment, as well as the location where they are used.
