Types of plumbing tools and their uses

Plumbing tools are used to cut metal and PVC pipes. There are different types of plumbing tools  such as pipe cutters and industrial tools. This article introduces the  different types of plumbing tools, their usage and precautions.

Types of plumbing tools

Various plumbing tools are used in plumbing work, including pipe wrenches, which are tools used for turning pipes. There are several types of plumbing tools, including pipe vises, pipe cutters, pipe threaders, water pump pliers, and chain pipe wrenches.

Pipe vise

A pipe vise is a tool that holds the pipe to cut it correctly. They are used on industrial vehicles. Those with legs are used at industrial sites.

Pipe cutter

This tool is shaped like a pipe and it cuts the pipe by rotating the tool. There are 1-blade and 3-blade tools, but 1-blade tools are the most commonly used. Currently, electric pipe threaders are being developed and widely used, but pipe cutters are a cheaper option.

Pipe threading machine

This tool is used for threading pipes. The Osta type threads with a set of four chaser blades, while the lead type threads with a set of two chasers.

Water pump pipe threader

These are pipe threaders for grabbing objects and turning pipes. This tool has several openings and can grab and turn pipes.

Chain pipe wrench

This tool is also used to turn a pipe. A chain is attached to the tip and hooked onto the pipe to hold or turn the pipe by turning the body.

How to use plumbing tools

Pipe vise

Since V-groove teeth are attached to the top and bottom, bite the tool into the pipe to fix it in place. Choose one that is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the pipe, and place the pipe in the vise by turning the handle to open the upper and lower teeth. Close the frame to prevent it from opening, and turn the screw with the handle to insert the pipe between the upper and lower teeth.

Pipe cutter

Fix the pipe with a vise or similar tool, open the knob, and lightly apply it to the cut section of the pipe. After attaching the cut line by moving the pipe cutter back and forth two or three times, check to see if it is straight. Next, cut the pipe with the pipe cutter while turning the handle. Cut while gradually deepening the cut.

Pipe thread cutter

The chaser is marked with the nominal size of the thread and the 1-4 number, so check and install it. Once the chaser is installed on the main unit, clamp it by matching the scale to the nominal size of the thread to be cut, and operate it like a circular knob to cut the thread. After cutting is complete, retract the chaser to remove it from the pipe. The lead type cannot be retracted, so it must be removed in the reverse direction.

Water pump pipe threader

When gripping a pipe, adjust the position of the screw according to the thickness of the pipe. When using, grip the end of the handle for strength.

Chain pipe wrench

Loosen the chain slightly and wrap it around the pipe. Hook the pins and extend from both sides of the chain into the grooves on the body and turn the body to catch the teeth on the pipe. This allows the pipe to be turned.

Precautions for use

Secure the pipe vise with a bolt before using it to prevent it from tipping over. Remove any foreign objects from the upper and lower grooves before use, as they will prevent the pipe from attaching into them. If the upper and lower teeth are worn out, have it repaired.

Pipe cutters have sharp blades, so do not touch them directly. Avoid using them in such a way as to forcefully turn, twist, or push them sideways. It will damage the cutting edge and shorten the life of the blade. If the blade becomes damaged, purchase a blade separately and have it replaced.

Pipe threader chasers also have sharp cutting edges. Do not touch them directly as it may cause injury.

In recent years, electric pipe threaders have been developed and the use of pipe cutters and pipe threaders decreases. Still, it is better to learn how to use them properly if necessary. Also, pipe vises are still widely used, so it is best to learn its features and how to use them.
