Special wrench type and usage

Special wrenches are useful for serious car and motorcycle maintenance. These tools are mainly needed for working in tight spaces. Here we introduce the Crowfoot wrench and the Torx wrench, which you can refer to if you want to start serious maintenance.

Types of Special Wrenches

There are two main types of special wrenches.

One is the crowfoot wrench. A crowfoot wrench is a tool used for work in places that cannot be reached with ordinary tools. It is used for hydraulic piping in automobiles and general industrial machinery, and is used to remove brake pipe nuts. Furthermore, by extending it with an extension bar, it can be used to work in any deep place. However, the Crowfoot wrench cannot be used alone; it must be combined with a spinner handle.

The Torx of the Torx wrench refers to a thread standard developed by Camcar Corporation of the United States. It is characterized by higher transmission efficiency and durability compared to conventional bolts and nuts. Generally used by professionals in the automotive and other industries, these tools are indispensable for those who maintain various types of industrial machinery.

Since both are special wrenches, they are rarely used by the general public, but they are useful to have when working on cars and motorcycles in earnest. In particular, Torx wrenches are often used on some foreign cars and Yamaha vehicles, and may be required for maintenance on some models. Let's take a closer look at the Crowfoot and Torx wrenches.

Crow Foot Wrench Features and Usage

Crowfoot wrenches are tools for use in tight spaces where sockets and wrenches will not fit. The flare is shaped like a piece of eyeglass wrench, and the open end is shaped like a wrench and suitable for quick turning. These can be combined with a conversion adapter or extension bar to freely adjust the length and angle for improved work efficiency. They can also be combined with torque wrenches, and the combination of the two will make it easier to work around shafts and pipes.

Crowfoot wrenches are often used to turn nuts related to brakes and clutches because of their shape. Possible areas of use for the general public include hydraulic machinery such as air conditioners, various types of piping, replacing brakes and clutches in automobiles, and installing sensors. With this tool, it is possible to grip a bolt or nut on five surfaces, whereas a wrench can grip it on two surfaces. This reduces the risk of damaging bolts and nuts and can be used in many locations.

What is a Torx Wrench?

A Torx wrench is a wrench that is compatible with Torx screws. The name 'Torx' is a registered trademark of Acumento, and the name 'Torx' cannot be used without a license and technical guidance from Acumento.

Torx thread standards are divided into T-type and E-type. The part where the bolt head makes contact with the tool is curved, and is characterized by its high efficiency in transmitting torque. Torx screws, also called hex-lobe screws, cannot be used with a Phillips- or flat-blade screwdriver and require a special Torx wrench.

Torx screws have a hexagonal star-shaped anti-tampering screw with a protrusion in the middle to prevent tampering. This is a measure to prevent the general public from disassembling them unnecessarily, and is used in car parts, cell phones, and computers. In automobile maintenance, they are sometimes used in airbags, seat belts, and other areas where safety is required.

How to use the Torx Wrench and precautions

To use a Torx wrench, first use one that matches the size of the bolt, insert it firmly into the bolt, and turn it in the direction of the bolt's rotation. Be careful not to tip over the tip of the wrench, as this will result in damage. Also, do not use the wrench for twisting the hexagonal part, as it may be damaged when a cracked wrench is used.

Hammering the wrench with a hammer to give it an impact or trying to pry it open with the tip is not a suitable method. Avoid using them by applying excessive force or splicing pipes.

Special wrenches are not necessary in most cases as long as simple automobile or motorcycle maintenance is performed. However, there are some parts of a car or motorcycle where bolts and nuts cannot be turned without the use of special tools. The two tools introduced here are necessary for special maintenance, so please be sure to use them.
