What is a force gauge?

A force gauge, sometimes called a push-pull gauge is a tool used to measure force applied to an object. It can be used to measure various forces, such as peel force, adhesion force, and friction force, by replacing attachments.

The unit of measurement is ’N’ (Newton). There are analog types that read the scale and digital types that can also be connected to a computer.

How to use a force gauge

A force gauge is used by holding it in the hand or attaching it to a test stand. Below are the usage of a force gauge for different work situations. 

Measuring the ‘pulling force’ of seat belts and pull tabs

Hook the measuring shaft at the tip onto the object and pull it back to read the scale.

Measurement of ‘pushing force’ of levers and buttons

Press the object with the measuring shaft at the tip and read the scale.

Spring compression and tensile testing

A force gauge is attached to a test stand, and a push or pull motion is applied to the object by a machine with uniform speed and direction.

Crimp terminal strength measurement

Set a wire and a force gauge with the wire crimped on the test stand. Pull the manual lever to apply force to the wire to check if it meets the tensile strength standard.


In the past, fine adjustments in manufacturing, such as the ‘force to press a button’ were set by the craftsman's sense of  touch.  However, force gauges have made it possible to quantify the force, enabling stable production with no variation from product to product. It is best to use a force gauge for more efficient results when measuring force.
